Air India, the leading global airline of India, and Air Astana, Kazakhstan’s national carrier, have signed a new codeshare agreement.

This partnership aims to provide travellers with more flight choices and seamless connectivity between India and Kazakhstan.

By combining their strengths, the airlines are making travel easier and more convenient for passengers.

Focus on Key India-Kazakhstan Routes

The codeshare agreement focuses on key routes between the two countries. Air Astana operates flights from Almaty to Delhi and Mumbai, and Air India will now place its “AI” code on these flights.

This allows Air India customers to book these routes easily and access Almaty, a vibrant hub for tourism and business in Central Asia.

Travelers can enjoy the convenience of a single ticket, with baggage checked through to their final destination, even when connecting from other cities via Delhi or Mumbai.

Campbell Wilson, Air India’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, shared his thoughts about the partnership. “This codeshare with Air Astana strengthens air links to Kazakhstan, a fast-growing market with great potential for tourism,” he said.

“It supports not only leisure travel but also trade and cultural exchanges between India and Kazakhstan. Our customers now have easier access to a dynamic Central Asian destination.”

Peter Foster, Chief Executive Officer of the Air Astana Group, supported the move. “We are thrilled to partner with Air India, Asia’s oldest airline and a well-managed business,” he said.

“India is a key market for us, with its growing population and booming travel sector. This codeshare will boost business, tourism, and student travel between our countries, especially as we increase flights to Delhi, Mumbai, and Goa.”

Building on Existing Interline Agreement

This codeshare builds on an existing interline agreement between the two airlines, which began earlier in 2025.

The interline partnership already allows Air India passengers to connect through Almaty to destinations like Astana (Kazakhstan), Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Dushanbe (Tajikistan), and Urumqi (China).

Similarly, Air Astana customers can access 18 domestic destinations in India and nine international ones via Delhi and Mumbai.

The new codeshare takes this collaboration further, offering a smoother booking and travel experience.

With the codeshare, passengers benefit from a streamlined process. They can book flights, check in, and manage their journey through a single platform.

This eliminates the hassle of multiple tickets or rechecking baggage during connections. The agreement opens up a wider network of destinations, making travel between India and Central Asia more accessible.
