Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT Official Now: Bring Spatial Design And Vivid Color Concepts

Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT Official Now

Today marks a significant moment for Huawei and its global fanbase as the company officially unveiled HarmonyOS NEXT “Galaxy Edition” during the Harmony Ecology Conference. The developer preview is now open for applications, and the commercial release is scheduled for Q4 2024.

Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT Official Introduction

Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT, known as HarmonyOS Galaxy Edition in Chinese, introduces a range of design concepts such as “Spatial,” “Vivid Color,” and “Immersive.” The user interface undergoes substantial changes, featuring a floating effect between components to enhance the three-dimensional experience. Clearer color distinctions in built-in applications streamline usability.

The new UI reflects major improvements, emphasizing native refinement, applications, smoothness, security, intelligence, and interconnection—a holistic approach for the ultimate user experience. HarmonyOS NEXT employs the self-developed Harmony kernel with a groundbreaking “heterogeneous native” parallel mechanism, boosting memory management efficiency threefold.

Yu Chengdong highlighted that the HarmonyOS kernel goes beyond traditional kernels, adapting seamlessly to diverse device scenarios. The HarmonyOS system stands as a comprehensive operating system, developed from programming language to compiler, eliminating reliance on the Linux kernel or AOSP.

Currently, over 200 HarmonyOS native applications are in development, covering a wide range of commonly used apps. More than half of China’s Top-200 mobile apps have initiated the development of HarmonyOS native applications. The HarmonyOS developer community is growing rapidly, with over 10,000 new registrations daily.

Key industries, including social, audio and video, games, finance, and food, have embraced the HarmonyOS ecosystem, with major players like Alipay, Jingdong, Xiaohongshu, and Meituan joining in. Huawei encourages developers through the HarmonyOS NEXT Developer Preview website, offering comprehensive hardware and software full-stack online services. This includes detailed app qualification audits, a development whitepaper, development kits, tutorials, and more.

Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT opens up vertical domain innovation capabilities for partners, providing tripartite SDK HarmonyOS for efficient full-link development tools. With an ecosystem of over 800 million Huawei devices (700 million as of August 2023), the company aims to lead the industry across various scenarios, creating a new blue ocean in the trillion-dollar market.

The “Galaxy Plan” was announced by Huawei, committing over 7 billion RMB to incentivize HarmonyOS native applications, meta-services, SDKs, and other ecological innovations. This initiative aims to rapidly build a stronger and richer ecosystem.

HarmonyOS NEXT Operating System Base

The operating system base of HarmonyOS includes the Pangu AI model, MindSpore AI Framework, DevEco Studio/DevEco Testing integrated development environment, HarmonyOS Design design system, ArkUI/ArkUI-X programming framework, Ark Compiler/Bisheng Compiler/Ark Runtime compiler & runtime, ArkTS/Cangjie programming language, and EROFS/HMDFS distributed file system for file management.

According to the current plan, Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT Galaxy Edition will release the developer Beta version in the second quarter and launch the official commercial version in the fourth quarter.
