Schiphol Airport Pioneers Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles in Ground Operations

Schiphol Airport has made history as the first major international airport to launch a pilot program using hydrogen-powered vehicles in daily operations.

This groundbreaking initiative features a specially designed aircraft tow vehicle and a prototype Toyota pick-up truck with a hydrogen-powered electric engine.

To support these vehicles, Schiphol has installed a temporary hydrogen refuelling station on-site. This pilot marks a significant step toward the airport’s goal of achieving emission-free ground operations by 2030.

Integration of Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles


The hydrogen-powered vehicles are integrated into Schiphol’s daily activities. The aircraft tow vehicle, for instance, moves KLM Boeing 737s between parking areas, hangars, taxiways, and gates several times a day.

Meanwhile, the hydrogen-powered pick-up truck supports Bird Control, the team tasked with keeping birds away from runways to ensure safety.

Through this pilot, Schiphol and its partners are testing the practicality of hydrogen vehicles, focusing on ease of use, reliable range, and compatibility with existing infrastructure.

This isn’t Schiphol’s first foray into hydrogen technology. A previous test with a hydrogen-powered ground power unit (H2 GPU) successfully provided emission-free power to stationary aircraft.

These efforts highlight Schiphol’s commitment to sustainable innovation in aviation.

Esmé Valk, Chief People & Transformation Officer at Royal Schiphol Group, explained the importance of this initiative.

 “We aim to lead the way in making aviation more sustainable. Hydrogen complements battery-electric vehicles, especially for high-intensity tasks or standby operations like Bird Control and the fire brigade.”

“This pilot helps us explore solutions that reduce emissions while improving air quality for our employees and the surrounding community.”

Benefits of Hydrogen

Hydrogen is a clean energy source that produces zero emissions during use, much like battery-electric vehicles. However, hydrogen vehicles offer unique advantages.

They refuel quickly and maintain a reliable range, even in cold weather, unlike battery-powered equipment that may require frequent recharging.

These qualities make hydrogen-powered vehicles an efficient and practical option for Schiphol’s ground operations, where uptime and reliability are critical.

A Collaborative Pilot Project

The pilot is a collaborative project involving Royal Schiphol Group and various partners, including manufacturers, airlines, and ground handling companies. This teamwork is essential for reducing indirect CO₂ emissions (Scope 3) across the aviation sector.

Schiphol is not only focused on greening its own operations but also on driving industry-wide innovation.

Part of a Larger Vision


The pilot, running until early October, is part of the TULIPS program, a Royal Schiphol Group initiative supported by a European Union grant. TULIPS focuses on developing and testing innovative concepts to make aviation more sustainable.

Through partnerships with research institutes like TNO and SINTEF, Schiphol is paving the way for a cleaner, greener future in aviation.

By embracing hydrogen technology, Schiphol is setting a global example for sustainable airport operations.

This pilot not only advances the airport’s environmental goals but also inspires the aviation industry to explore innovative, emission-free solutions.
